A Leader Leads

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Leaders have a duty to do the right thing. That means not worrying about recognition or fame. We do our job and move on to the next thing. This is something I had early in my career. Lost for a little bit and now have started to get back. It’s setting an example for those who lead. In doing podcasts and conference talks I’ve been told my idea is going to be stolen. I’m fine with that because it means that’s a good idea and if it helps make my field and the world a little better place, I’m all for it.

Some Simple Rules

Simply:

Follow these rules in life. I think it makes sense. Working on all of these will take some time. I think the toughest one for me is not letting my thoughts wander. I can get too into my own head.

The Start-up of You

The entrepreneur spirit is something I hear about often. Listening to podcasts. Reading articles. It’s in our society. An opportunity to be our own boss and live the life we want. Today’s stoic is about treating our own lives as those opportunities. We have experiences and growth just like a new business. I like that idea, because it is a focus I have currently. How do I maximize myself. How do I build myself. How do I have my own freedom. It’s encouraging and liberating to re-frame my thoughts towards that. I’ve thought about my own business. I think that will come later. Right now I’m working on maximizing myself.

Love The Humble Art

Love the craft be a craftsmen. I don’t know how video games fits into the rest of my life. At first glance it may seem like a waste of time. Some games has a time played statistic. Looking at it you start wondering if you’ve spent too much time in this virtual world. You could have used that time for other things. The thing is that I enjoy doing this so to me it’s time well spent. There are certain aspects of this game that can apply to real life. Figuring out problems or how to improve myself so that my play-style is an advantage over my opponent. There are lessons to be drawn that can be applied in other areas of my life. So, is my craft video games or IT security professional. I’m starting to draw the conclusion that my craft is learning and exploring life.

Yesterday - Stop Monkeying Around

The way to self-respect is to accept responsibility for our own lives and not complain about things out of our control. I’ve started to feel more self-respect and confident. I have a mohawk-style hair cut (looks awful with what little hair I have growing). I did it because why not while we’re stuck at home and the kids wanted to see me grow my hair out. A lot of people have said it looks ugly. Very few have complimented me on it. What others think doesn’t really bother me because I can’t control their feelings, thoughts, or the words they say.

It’s taken some work to get to this point. Work and the pandemic have given me plenty of opportunities to work on letting go of the complaining and worry. I feel much freer. I also like wearing my hat on the top of my head now.

Today - The Philosopher King

Philosophy has it’s place for leaders. It helps us make, “…ethical decisions that require priorities, balance, and clarity. “ I’m not just a leader at work. I’m also a leader among my family and friends. I make decisions on a daily basis and being philosophical helps with that.
