Where To Find Joy

May 16, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

We find joy in doing proper work. That’s been difficult for me because I don’t often know what that work is. Studying stoicism hasn’t really helped. It’s helped me become more at peace and maybe that’s the proper work. Learning to be comfortable with not knowing and letting life just come to me.

Making Your Own Good Fortune

May 15, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

To make myself more lucky I’ve had to put myself out there. I could think that the current wonderful company I’m at is due to luck. In reality I made some of my own luck by working hard and putting in extra effort to network within my profession. I tell people who come up through the profession who think they’re lucky that they really just put themselves into a better position to succeed.

Daily Stoic(s)

May 14, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Yesterday - Today Is The Day

Everyday is an opportunity to do something. Why wait.

Today - Show Me How To Live

The present here and now. This is where to live. I’ve started walking in the morning without headphones in. Instead I listen to the present. To the cars going by or the birds in the tree. I feel it’s made a difference in my day-to-day activities. Enjoy the now.

Daily Stoic(s)

May 12, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Yesterday - Quality Over Quantity

One of the things I try to focus on is quality. Working on the right things or reading the right things. It can be hard some times to find the right things. With books I’ll add a book to my Amazon list to buy later. If it ends up on there multiple times it helps identify the books with the most recommendations.

Today - What Kind Of Boxer Are You

Boxers get hit a lot. If they give up after the few punches they end up losing. The stoic asks about that in life. Are you the boxer that falls down after just one punch or the boxer that keeps going even when it’s tough. In my profession there can be lots of bad breaks and punches in the mouth. It can get frustrating but I have to keep going.

Learn, Practice, Train

May 10, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Presenting is usually 30-60 minutes long. Most presenters have to spend several hours to learning and practicing their presentation. I’ve noticed the difference when I give a presentation that I’ve spent a lot of time practicing and others I spend very little practicing. The quality comes from doing the presentation over and over again. This helps with timing and refining the content of the talk. What is in our head might sound good there but come out awkward when spoken.

Interviewing is the same way. We rarely do it. Yet, a lot of us walk into an interview not having spent any time learning, practicing, and training. Now that I do all that my interviews are a much better experience.
