Want Nothing = Have Everything

August 21, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Wanting less is something I’ve striven for. Last year I picked up golf and that added some new wants which makes it a bit more of a balancing act. I can afford the hobby but it is a new hobby that is hitting our finances differently than other hobbies. To me it’s an adjustment in some of the other things. Probably for the better like craft beer. I can reduce that and still have money for golf. It’s probably better for my health anyway.

Daily Stoic(s)

Yesterday - Laugh, Or Cry

Humor is more productive than crying because it makes light of situations. There are times when I get to a point that I want to laugh. Usually that’s after a string of frustrating things. I should try laughing a little earlier and see if that makes a difference.

Today - The Opulent Stoic

Being happy with little is what I strive for. I don’t need mounds of wealth. When I started having kids all I wanted for them was enough money to take regular trips and have some fun. I don’t need a massive house or really nice cars. My cars are even pretty practical and I drive them until they start costing a bit too much to maintain. This also means I don’t have to work late hours or kill myself for my job and climb the corporate ladder. I’m happy where I’m at.

Seeking Out Shipwrecks

August 18, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Unfortunate situations can turn out to be good opportunities. I had planned to go to DEFCON with a friend. They had to back out and suddenly I was in Vegas alone. Instead of feeling sorry for myself I took it as an opportunity to be comfortable with being by myself. When I attend those conferences I like to be around other people and build relationships. This time I took it as an opportunity to do other things like workout or explore Vegas off the strip a little bit. It was an enjoyable experience that provided some valuable insights.

Respect The Past, But Be Open To The Future

August 17, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

I love that the stoics even recognized innovation. Doing something better. Learning something better. Being better than the previous generation. We can still respect the past and be open to the possibilities of the future.

Pillage From All Sources

August 16, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

I try to keep in mind that I can learn something from everyone. Even the most abrasive and moronic people. They might have a good point despite my feelings. I try to put myself in the other persons shoes. To understand where they’re coming from. There’s often something to learn.
