What's Truly Impressive

April 24, 2022

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Recently I’ve been talking to friends about money and how I like to grab the check with people because they’ll want to return the favor later. It simplifies things but it also shows trust in the other person. I do it with some friends because I know they have the same line of thinking as I do and that they’ll get me back later. Plus, how much money do I really need. I can’t take it with me so why not share with others.

Thursday - Make Character Your Loudest Statement

This is something I was discussing recently. How I can’t control things at work so I should control what I can and be an example instead of complaining or wasting energy on things I can’t control.

Yesterday - Be The Person You Want To Be

What I want is always counter to what I grew up with. I’ve had success in some areas. Other areas I still struggle but I am making progress. It’s tough when the habits formed years ago need to change. I have to have patience because I am changing them. Though maybe not as quickly as I’d like.

Today - Show, Not Tell, What You Know

This is something I can struggle with. I can get a bit preachy in conversations. I have to remember the other people at the table and put the focus on them and what they want to know. If I’m asked a question I answer it. I try to be the asker though because there’s more power in listening than talking.

Monday - Wants Make You A Servant

This is an interesting stoic because I don’t have to put up with tyranny but I also have to for the sake of my sanity and those around me. I’ve pushed on this because I don’t care and that has backfired. I don’t like complacency but it can be a place where peace is

Yesterday - Washing Away The Dust of Life

I’ve tried to remember that in the grand scheme of things my worries and wants are small. Sometimes petty. Listening to a career podcast on my way into work they recommended the same thing for people above me. They might not have as much insight and thus make poor choices. I can accept them or I can be petty. In the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter. And things have a way of coming back around again.

Today - What Is In Keeping With Your Character?

I think a lot. I think a lot about improving. I think about habits. That can be a bad thing because I look for escapes to my thoughts. Recognizing that though helps me improve and is key to this stoic. I know who I am and I’m willing to adjust if necessary.

Turn It Inside Out

April 17, 2022

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

The impulse to drink is something I’m currently trying to look at from the inside out. It’s been working pretty good lately. Instead of that one last drink I’m either pouring it out or avoiding it all together. I look at the clock and realize I don’t sleep in like I used to so staying up late won’t end well for me the next morning. I’m actually trying to get into a better rhythm about sleeping. Trying to find those hours where I maximize sleep.

Thursday - A Productive Use For Contempt

As I’ve gotten older I’ve found that even the most successful people have demons. This was highlighted recently by Will Smith. I’ve read his book and there’s a lot of things he had to work through and overcome. I’ve been doing the same with parts of my life. I’ve been told I don’t have any insecurities when in fact I have lots of them.

Yesterday - There’s Nothing Wrong With Being Wrong

I was having a conversation with a fellow peer recently. I was talking about a document I put together. It went through eight different versions and at one point someone told me it was shit. I said that’s fine I’m not tied to the document personally and I’ve instituted ever bit of feedback from others for the document. So it wasn’t my document it was all of ours. Tell me how to make it not shit and I will change it.

I don’t take discussions which people often think are arguments personally. They can get heated but I try to keep an open mind and admit being wrong. This is how progress happens. Having discussions and adjusting perceptions as needed.

Today - Things Happen In Training

I don’t take work personally. I accept that I’m going to disagree with people on ideas. I don’t every think they’re a bad person. I think they may be misguided because of experiences or how they approach things. One thing I do need to get better at is recognizing that they may change their mind at some point and I can’t hold how they used to act against them.
