Daily Stoic(s)

March 7, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Yesterday - The Present Is All We Possess

I went golfing this morning. One of the things the game is teaching me is that I have to live in the moment. I can’t worry about past shorts or future ones. What I have is this shot right here and now. Getting into that mindset really helped me today. I beat my best round of golf by one stroke. Now that the round is over I can enjoy it for that moment and then I move on to this week, where I’ll work on some stuff and try to improve upon it. Expecting to improve can have it’s own downfall though. I could shoot my worst round next week. It’s happened before after setting my previous best. That’s why I’m focusing on the present here and now and not past or future outcomes.

Today - That Sacred Part Of You

Understanding is a key part of our existence. I’m learning to take that as something not to under appreciate.

The Daily Drucker

March 5, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Drucker: 366 Days of Insight and Motivation for Getting the Right Things Done.

Yesterday - Social Purpose for Society

The action point is to define an organizational goal that goes beyond financial results. The security of an organization is a red line item in the budget. We don’t make money for the organization, which is often why some companies either don’t invest or invest the minimum needed. I’m lucky to be at an organization that has invested heavily in security. It makes my job a lot easier and allows me to do things I don’t get to do at other organizations. For the company it provides value in the form of avoiding security incidents and keeping member sensitive information safe.

Today - Reinventing Government

The action point asks if the company can profit from government incompetence. I believe that’s what the company I work at is doing. There are a lot of problems with healthcare. Our company is trying to be a disrupter in the space. We put the responsibility on clients to make sure they are taking care of the people that work for them. There is certainly a return on investment for the company if they have healthier and happier workers.

Yesterday - One Day It Will All Make Sense

When I was younger, I was frustrated that things weren’t going my way in life. I’ve since learned that things all happen for a reason and that the experiences I had early on helped me become the person I am good or bad. I like to think that it’s more good than bad. I’m a much better place and that took time.

Today - Self-Deception Is Our Enemy

Ego is the enemy. Golf has taught me that. When I think I’m going to do great, I end up having one of my worst rounds. I’m starting to get to a place where I enter a round and accept it for what it is. There’s always new things to learn. I have a green notebook I keep in my golf bag. After every round I write down the things I learned from the round because golf is a game that requires constant improvement. It’s a thing for me to chase in life and allows me to remain humble in not only golf but everything I do.

Need for a Harmony of Interests

March 3, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Drucker: 366 Days of Insight and Motivation for Getting the Right Things Done.

The action point asks to send an email to the chairman of a mutual fund I have shares in and ask for proof that I have not been harmed by the practice of investments prior to 2004. It’s 2021, so I’m not sure how well that works. I think what today’s Drucker is getting at is that businesses need to do things in a way that is beneficial to both sides or any side for that matter. They should not get an advantage over the individual. Which is interesting because in my experience I’ve seen departments like HR take advantage of people asking for lower than their worth, simply because they don’t know where they should fall in the companies pay scale. I’ve also seen it do other shady things to save a buck. That’s probably why the HR department is not usually a favorite within companies.

Seeing Things As The Person At Fault Does

March 3, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Looking at things from another person’s perspective when I feel they are wrong is a hard thing to do. It’s a harder thing to remember to do. I try. Usually that’s when I’m confused about the reason for making this decision or that or doing things another way. With my team I’m learning that they’re not like me and won’t do things the way I’ve done them. How could they. They didn’t grow up with my family or my experiences. I have to remember that when I want to step in and take charge. It can be a very difficult thing to do. I’m getting better at it.
