Daily Stoic(s)

June 11, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Wednesday - Offense or Defense

I’ve always been more of a defensive guy. In baseball I appreciate low scoring close games with dazzling pitching and defense. I’d rather see a perfect game or no-hitter than the cycle or a milestone homerun. It’s the same in video games. I’ve often the healer or other support role. It’s interesting how I can find those same themes in my life.

Yesterday - Prepared and Active

I learned in golf that if I went in expecting to have a good round, I would often shoot my worst. Now I try to go into a round with no expectations and let the game come to me. I can start off a round poorly and end up with a great round. I can also start with an awesome round and watch it fall apart during the end. Then there are the rounds where it all comes together.

Today - Stay Focused On The Present

When I swing in golf I’ve started to stay in the moment. Focus on the body part movements and let the results come as they are. If I’m thinking about results good or bad I tend to end up hitting a poor shot. I feel when I’m more in the moment, that’s when I have my really good shots.

No Shame In Needing Help

June 8, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

I’m trying to think of a time when I won’t ask for help. It’s probably in situations where I don’t know anyone. I can get a bit shy and figure I’ll figure it out on my own. If I know people I’ll ask for help when I feel like I need it. I think that’s the key word though for everyone, “feel like” because that can vary from person-to-person and situation-to-situation. It’s a very humbling experience to ask for help.

Listening Accomplishes More Than Speaking

June 7, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Listening allows me to tap into situations much better than talking. Instead of telling someone how it should be I try to ask questions to better understand the goal and quite often the frustrations. It’s helped me become very successful. It’s also something I can forget at times. I can get ranty or preachy about things and that’s when I tend to start losing the person I’m talking to.

Try The Other Handle

June 6, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Trying different handles is something that for me takes time. I tend to fail over and over again until it really sinks in. When it sinks in though I tend to not revert back to the other handle. It’s almost like I don’t just pull down on the handle I pull up and to the side and diagonally. I try the handle many different ways until I eventually move on. It can be frustrating but it’s progress and that’s just how I go about it. I wish I could just switch to the other handle.

Life Is A Battlefield

June 5, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Life is a constant struggle or in this stoic battle. There’s a lot of things we fight on a daily basis. Hunger, impulses, emotions, and bad habits. It’s good to remember when making decisions that even when I want to do something I may be losing a battle.
