I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.
Saturday - Turn It Inside Out
Denis Degioanni
There is a need to look at things from different angles. This is the core of stoicism. Taking all things into account. It reminds me that I should ask questions more and talk less. Asking simple questions can provide a lot of insight at home, at work, and on social media. I fall into talking often. Some of that I think comes from being in a management role. My guys look to me for guidance. The truly great leaders often are the last to speak. They take in all accounts all angles and then make a decision. I plan to do more of that.
Yesterday - Wants Make You a Servant
Power exists from our wants. We become a slave to our wants when we indulge and chase after them. Without wants we become free. I think of video games and alcohol. I like the way they make me feel and usually want an over abundance of it. This gives those companies power over how I operate in life. They control what time I go to bed and often times the production I perform the next day. I need to learn to become a bit more indifferent to them.
Today - Washing Away The Dust of Life
Staring at the stars can have the effect of making us small. Problems we once thought big can become small. I’m reminded of #firstworldproblems, where people remind themselves that not have a phone charger is the least of someone’s concerns in a third-world country. I’ve wondered if we had a war going on if we’d have as much reaction to COVID-19 as we’ve had. It’s the most recent and so far not near close to the most deadly pandemic we’ve seen in human history. I’ve also thought about an alien invasion. Like independence day we would rally together and put aside our difference to defeat a common enemy. I think taking a 10,000 foot view of our life from time-to-time is beneficial.
