Knowledge Workers: Asset Not Cost

January 22, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Drucker: 366 Days of Insight and Motivation for Getting the Right Things Done.

The action point is to treat the assets of our organization, knowledge workers, as valuable. The company I work at does that. We have a high retention rate. I was thinking about that the other day as I was working with the director of development. He was one of the first people I met at the company. As our departments have changed we still work together quite a bit and have a strong relationship in place. That would be lost if one of us were to leave. The company would lose some of it’s current efficiency.

One of the activities I’m running through right now is hiring for a junior role. Hiring is one of the most important decisions I will make. I make sure to include my team in the process and set the bar high. My people are involved in the process because I want them to see that we’re not going to bring just anyone on the team. We’re going to bring on another highly valuable asset that will bring productivity to the team, not drag it down. That means looking and trying to find quality.
