Guilt Is Worse Than Jail

May 2, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

There’s stress in guilt. The thing I can relate to is taking off strokes in golf. I try to stick to counting all my strokes in golf. It’s easy to cheat strokes here and there. I’ve taken on our two shots before. Often it’s because the course is in poor shape or we need to keep the pace of play going. I don’t do very many mulligans because I want to improve. The way to do that is to make sure I’m counting all my strokes.

Daily Stoic(s)

May 1, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Thursday - Good And Evil? Look At Your Choices

Focus only on my choice. The right thing always comes from my choice. This stoic is not really clicking for me. I guess it means to focus on the choice. Evaluate it and make a determination if it was a good or evil choice. And what defines that criteria?

Yesterday - Carpe Diem

I had a pretty good day on Friday. It slipped away into Saturday where I set myself behind the next day after playing games late and watching a movie. These are happening less and less. I don’t tend to sleep in anymore and I’m usually up by 8 a.m. regardless of when I went to bed. I am learning to take advantage of each day. There are periods where I set myself behind. Progress is happening and I’m taking that in.

Today - Don’t Be Inspired, Be Inspirational

Some of the key moments of inspiration often come from the things I’m doing. I try to show people that there are better ways of doing things. This doesn’t come from watching or being inspired by something. It’s from doing and experience. At work I’m trying to be a good manager. I don’t preach about it. I instead do what I can to be good and hopefully those acts will produce good people who report to me. I am starting to see people come to me more and more for managerial guidance and advice. I’ve been talking about these concepts before. It’s only through practice and results that the words start getting some inspirational weight.

How To Have A Good Day

April 28, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Do good things. There is something satisfying about leaving work having put in a good days work. Some days feel like less than others. I’m trying to remember that while I may have not gotten as much done as other days I still showed up and had an impact and maybe that impact was something intangible.

Righteousness Is Beautiful

April 27, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Being a good person is beautiful. That means being stoic in all action. It’s putting effort and value into the right things. The stoic talks about the genetic lottery. Those people with special face structure and features are considered beautiful. That’s only surface level beauty. Real beauty is in the decisions and actions a person takes. The movie Shallow Hal highlighted this when Hal gets a change in perspective. Visually he sees the value in people as their true beauty. This turns beautiful people into disgusting appearances and people with less than ideal features into beautiful people. Gwyneth Paltrow wore a fat suit for part of the movie. The rest she was her normal sweet self.

You Are The Project

April 26, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

My mind is a project that I must work to hone. I feel like I’ve made some really great strides in that the past year studying stoicism. I’m reading more and I’m stressing less. I think the pandemic gets a lot of credit for forcing me to take in life a little more. To realize that I can control what I can control. There’s still a lot of work to be done and I’m excited for that purpose.
