Daily Stoic(s)

November 1, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Saturday - How To Be Powerful

I think athletes have a lot of stoicism. They have to in their role. I was at Game 5 of the World Series Sunday night and I noticed when they put current and former athletes on the big screen they usually waved their hand. The opposite of that were people super excited to get their shot on the big screen at the park. They’d often jump around and scream and shout. I thought this interesting that the athlete was calm and cool while the rest of us are very excited. I think that comes down to athletes focusing on themselves and don’t see a big need to be on that screen.

Yesterday - Actors In A Play

I feel I’m starting to figure out more of my role. Doing things like golf means have my own unique swing. I can’t copy what others do because my body type is different. My athleticism is different. I’m working to learn what that is and use that to my advantage. I think it’s similar to accepting life and the role I am to play in it. I don’t have a full picture but it is starting to get clearer.

Today - All Is Fluid

I love this because I’ve recently noticed the shift and change in me. I’ve made progress in some of the things I want to be doing in life. I’m sleeping more and consuming less. Things change. I’ve changed and what I used to do 20 years ago is not the way I am now. I am accepting and appreciative of this because I’m not where I want to be and really there is no end until it’s the end.

Yesterday - A Higher Power

Giving up control. Accepting that I am not the director of my life. Video gaming I’ve seen this a lot. One small misstep or play can change the game. It’s the same with sport that one error opens the door for a big inning that otherwise wouldn’t happen. As I’ve studied stoicism and gotten into golf I appreciate more of what athletes have to put up with on a regular basis. They have to let go of what’s transpired and look ahead. That’s not always easy and may explain why some players with all the talent in the world can’t be successful

Today - Someone Else Is Spinning The Thread

I love what Uhtred from the Last Kingdom says. Destiny is all. In the books he often talks about the ladies that spin our destiny. They set our path and can end it at any point. My life has been a series of those things. Going into the Army and then not going in and instead going into the Navy. A happen meeting of a friend on the highway that led to me meeting my wife. The job I currently have. All things that were set in motion and my life could have been different because of anyone of the multiple course I could have been put on.

Monday - Binding Our Wishes To What Will Be

Golf is a powerful vessel for this stoic. I’ve had good rounds and bad rounds and rounds in between. Just when I think things are going well I start hitting poorly or maybe I’m hitting well and I hit a good shot into a bad outcome. It happens often and I’m still learning that what will happen happens. I can practice and prepare as much as I can and that helps minimize mistakes but in the end I can hit anywhere within a 20 shot range.

Yesterday - Following The Doctor’s Orders

I’ve accepted that nature has a roll to play in fate. That can be on the golf course or in life. It’s interesting how things with no relations add up. I’ve had a recent experience at work where things people have said to me make me wonder if it’s destiny to pursue something else. I’m not one necessarily to jump in to that though and I’m seeing if nature has another way of intervening. It could just be coincidence in the end.

Today - Not Good Nor Bad

Things happen. I can’t change them. I can control how I respond and try to learn from them.

Accepting What Is

October 24, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Golf has really helped me with learning this lesson. Accepting what’s in the past because there’s nothing I can do to change it. The stoic recommends taking it a step further and enjoying it. That’s a bit harder to do in the moment but something I see as necessary. That’s how I get better.

You Were Born Good

October 23, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

This is where the movies and story talk about redemption. Where a person turned bad can return to the good side. I think we’re all born good. Some are turned to bad because of the situation their. Even those born with a lack of empathy are turned bad by their environment. Otherwise their environment can make them good despite a lack of empathy. I don’t think there can be good without bad though because then what would truly define good. This is an interesting stoic to dive into because I don’t think things are always black and white.
