Wish Not, Want Not

February 11, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

This is an interesting concept. I’m thinking about it in terms of small things. I don’t desire fame or fortune. Those things have their problems. I also don’t get excited about upcoming things a whole lot. From time-to-time they happen. Usually, I take everything in stride. What I’m focusing on is work. Work that I want to get done, but I have a lot of other responsibilities that often take over that desire. I’m very busy at work fulfilling obligations to other things.

I desire to work on some things I’m interested in. The time I have for that is minimal. I still manage to get them done though. Usually, in a 40-hour work week. I’m also willing to accept adjusting those things. I wonder though if managing the obligations of others I’m losing out on my desires. My thoughts right now are a bit tangled.

I’m exhausted at the end of the day fulfilling needs and goals of others. They are still my own but I have control over very little because security’s nature is to prioritize things for me. When I get done with work I want to relax and blow off some steam. Yet, I still have chores and other things I need to do. Am I wanting too much of my own time to relax or should I not even want that and continue to grind things out. 7

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Drucker: 366 Days of Insight and Motivation for Getting the Right Things Done.

The action point asks if me and organization are change agents? and what steps are taken to both change and balance change with stability. The company I work at is looking to be a disrupter in the healthcare space. I’m not sure what steps are taken but I think it starts with hiring good people. For me personally, I’ve tried to be an agent for change in security and now management. I am fortunate enough to join a security team that values that. I’ve proposed new and different ways of doing things from a security standpoint and have been supported in those efforts.

From a management perspective it’s been different. I have gotten a lot more push back on things I want to do around hiring people. I’ve had to concede and tone back the hiring process I initially wanted. Each time though I am pushing the boundaries just a little bit. Ultimately, what will make change happen is results. That for me is to continue to develop my team and hire high quality talent.

The Grand Parade Of Desire

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Philosopher Notorious B.I.G. once said, “Mo Money Mo Problems.”

B.I.G. had his problems. Puff has had his problems. Mace has had his problems. And Tiger Woods whom Puff imitates had his problems. Just because I can doesn’t mean I should.

Reinvent Yourself

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Drucker: 366 Days of Insight and Motivation for Getting the Right Things Done.

The action point is to ask those ahead of me how they went about repotting themselves. What steps should I take now. I like this idea. I have a skip-level with my CISO once a year. One of my favorite things to ask him is a book that impacted him. He’s provided me with some good reads to improve myself. It’s an action that Ryan Holiday recommends. I did it recently when I was talking to someone about work and we got into a discussion about books. He provided me with some recommendations for that. I’ve added them to my reading list.

The Banquet Of Life

February 9, 2021

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

The stoic talks about letting things come to me. Don’t reach out or jump the line for things desired. I feel like that’s something I’ve struggled with over the last few years. Try to find purpose and the next project. Instead I should look for opportunities when they present themselves. I’ve recently discovered this with a high-risk investment. It’s something I wanted to get into and was eventually presented to me by some close friends who I trust. We went in and we’re waiting to see that outcome.

It also talks about being a glutton and fattening on the things around me. I’ve done that with video games and alcohol. I’m starting to use those in more moderation. The pandemic for as much of it I hated and desired for the world whole again has given me opportunities to advance my stoicism and practice it.
