Daily Stoic(s)

April 16, 2022

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Thursday - A Productive Use For Contempt

As I’ve gotten older I’ve found that even the most successful people have demons. This was highlighted recently by Will Smith. I’ve read his book and there’s a lot of things he had to work through and overcome. I’ve been doing the same with parts of my life. I’ve been told I don’t have any insecurities when in fact I have lots of them.

Yesterday - There’s Nothing Wrong With Being Wrong

I was having a conversation with a fellow peer recently. I was talking about a document I put together. It went through eight different versions and at one point someone told me it was shit. I said that’s fine I’m not tied to the document personally and I’ve instituted ever bit of feedback from others for the document. So it wasn’t my document it was all of ours. Tell me how to make it not shit and I will change it.

I don’t take discussions which people often think are arguments personally. They can get heated but I try to keep an open mind and admit being wrong. This is how progress happens. Having discussions and adjusting perceptions as needed.

Today - Things Happen In Training

I don’t take work personally. I accept that I’m going to disagree with people on ideas. I don’t every think they’re a bad person. I think they may be misguided because of experiences or how they approach things. One thing I do need to get better at is recognizing that they may change their mind at some point and I can’t hold how they used to act against them.

Monday - Don’t Let Your Attention Slide

Even though I turn off most notifications and avoid a lot of social media. I have noticed that there is still more attention grabbing things I could avoid. I think video games, shows, and movies can be those. There is certainly a time and place for those activities, I just feel I’ve gotten into a habit of relying on them when I’m bored.

Yesterday - The Marks of a Rational Person

I have the self-awareness and self-examination down. I need to work more on the self-determination. Making good choices when impulses and habits step in the way. I have certainly made small strides over the last year, so I also have to be patient about improving my choices.

Today - The Mind is all Yours

This is a stoic I’ve remembered. I can’t control my body or breath. I can control my mind. I make choices on how to respond to things. If my body fails me there’s not much I can do about other than move on or accept the end.

Real Good Is Simple

April 10, 2022

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Wisdom, self-control, justice, and courage are what the stoic strives for. I’ve felt this with meeting my career goals. I wonder what was next. I have ambition but not for climbing the ladder. It’s been good to discover myself and gain some of those four things.

Thursday - No Harm, No Foul

I often remind myself that I’m choosing to feel harmed. Gaming has really helped me practice this because chat can be a very toxic place. Having a level-head about responses to things anonymous strangers say helps make the experience much more enjoyable.

Yesterday - Opinions Are Like…

I find this an interesting stoic to try and balance. I’ve found not having an opinion refreshing. Yet there are other stoics that talk about duty and caring about things going on around me. That also begs the question of what should I have an opinion on? I can’t not have an opinion all the time because then I feel lost or aimless.

Today - Our Sphere of Impulses

I feel like I have a good approach to learning. I am looking to learn something from someone. Younger or older. Experienced or not. There are lessons everywhere and that helps keep me in check.

Observe Cause and Effect

April 6, 2022

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

I try to look at my negative thoughts. I try to turn them positive. It’s not as easy as thinking. When I’m really down thinking positively or optimistically is really tough. I recognize I need to think better but it’s not a light switch. There are all sorts of variables and influences kicking in that make it tough.
