Daily Stoic(s)

August 31, 2020

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Yesterday - Preparing On The Sunny Day

The scouts have a saying, “be prepared.” It’s one of the positive things I’ve taken with me through life from scouts. We must prepare for the worst when things are good. I’ve always been a bit of a saver in life. It’s recommended that you save six months of your pay for when the bad times hit. I was fortunate not to lose my job during the pandemic. I did take a small pay cut. It didn’t impact my family a whole lot because we’ve tried to be good stewards with our money and save for that rainy day. There’s a great podcast from manager tools that says race don’t chase. In the business world if you control budget now is the time to look for how you can become leaner, so when you’re asked to cut budget you’re already there.

Today - What Would Less Look Like?

The comments above could apply to this as well. When we moved from South Carolina to Tennessee we realized what had accumulated stuff. Stuff we didn’t need and stuff that was just one more thing to pack or get rid of. We cleaned out about half of our house. We were in a 2200 square foot home. When we bought a house in Tennessee we opted for a 1600 square foot. We still accumulate stuff we’re just more picky about it. The space we have will fill with stuff that’s both external and internal. Wanting more and more will create a black hole that we try to fill with an endless amount of stuff.

Yesterday - Do Not Be Deceived By Fortune

I try not to get to excited about good news, because I’m always weary of the other shoe dropping on that fortune. Life has it’s ups and downs. I’ve ridden that roller coaster.

Today - Nothing To Fear But Fear Itself

Fear is a strong emotion that can lead us to bad decisions. One of the books that made a huge impact on my life is Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers. It taught me that I need to recognize my fear and then push forward regardless of the fear. It’s okay to fear. It’s not okay to be crippled by it.

Our Hidden Power

August 27, 2020

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Your power as a human is to reason and make choices. When times are tough you have a choice. You can let the tough times beat you down or find opportunity in that situation. I’ve started challenging my guys at work more. Okay there’s a challenge in front of you. What are the options around that choice? An obstacle or struggle is an opportunity for creativity. We can take the easy way out or look for further insight in those challenges.

They Can Throw You In Chains, But...

August 26, 2020

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

No matter the circumstances we make the choice of who we are. I’m trying to instill this in my kids. Just because you have a disability or struggle with something more than others means that it defines you. You get to choose how you approach the struggles of life. When they get upset or made at one another or us and say “you’re making me this way” I respond that they are choosing to react that way. I’m not some stoic person in all this. I have frustrations and outbursts. I make mistakes. Often what defines us is how respond to situations. We can cower and give up or try to move forward with courage and resilience.

Focus On What Is Yours Alone

August 25, 2020

I am blogging everyday (or nearly everyday) on The Daily Stoic.

Focus on the self in times of struggle. Focus on what I can control. This has been a key takeaway from this pandemic for me. Very early on I was angry, frustrated, and upset. I’ve since learned doing the daily stoics and reading other books that I can’t control the pandemic. What I can control is my choices and thoughts. I started to prepare myself for the long haul. Expecting us to be home through the end of 2020. A nice middle ground would be the fall and summer the best case scenario. I am now expecting it to be 2021 before we go back as there are still a lot of unknowns about the pandemic.

That means I must prepare for the winter. Currently, I spend as much time outside during my work day. I start my day with a run. I take meetings on my back porch and walk during lunch. It’s my way of coping with this thing because I know it can wear me down if I’m in the house all day at the same place I like to relax. It’s worked well. With winter coming I won’t have that luxury with 30 degree weather. I’m starting to plan for that scenario and think about how I’m going to get through this without going crazy. That’s probably the biggest benefit I’ve had from this pandemic. Learning to deal with struggle in a more effective way.
